The following is a quote taken from the BIA Strategic Plan 2000:
“…by any socioeconomic measure, American Indians trail the general US Population.”
This statement highlights the epidemic that plagues American Indians communities in the United States. In the state of Wisconsin an average of 54.09 percent of American Indians live below the poverty line (BIA stats for 2000). American Indians and Alaska Natives were the only group to show a decline in their poverty rate when the two-year 2000-2001 average was compared with the two-year 1999-2000 average (www.census.gov). This data illustrates one thing – the American Indian community is in need of economic development support services towards sustainable wealth building. The efforts of the AICCW and its partners play a significant role in alleviating poverty in Wisconsin’s American Indian community. By giving a gift you can become one of those partners.
